Explorations in Interdisciplinarity

PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences, HBKU, Doha, Qatar, launched in 2019/2020.
Drawing on insights from InterDisciplinarity Studies (IDS), this course explores the ways in which interdisciplinarity has been practiced in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It focuses on contemporary fields of knowledge – including but not limited to the digital humanities, intercultural communication, translation, gender studies, sciences and technology studies – and on the traditional “disciplines” they have inherited from.


Current Trends in Translation Studies

In anticipation of the requirements of the MA thesis, this course provides students with an overview of the current trends in translation studies. Through critical engagement with theory and its scholarly and practical applications, it invites students to think reflectively about the complexity and implications of the choices they will have to make as translators and/or scholars


Advanced Research Methods in Translation Studies

This course prepares students to write their MA thesis, whether research or practice-oriented. It leads students through the main areas of research and inquiry in Translation Studies, the principles of designing research projects, reviewing the literature, textual data collection and analysis as well as writing and presenting research according to international academic standards.

This course prepares students to conduct, evaluate and communicate research work. It discusses the epistemological foundations of qualitative and quantitative research and surveys key issues in research. Taking a comparative approach, it familiarizes students with various research methods, such as survey research, interview techniques and how to generate and use primary sources.


Quantitative and Qualitative Survey Methodology

Through a combination of theoretical insights and survey practice, students will learn to identify a research question, to distinguish the research question from survey questions, to identify the benefits and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative approaches for survey methodology and find the appropriate toolkits for survey design, data collection and analysis.


Introduction to Information and Communication Sciences

This course draws on contemporary approaches to communication (Philosophy, Sociology, Media and Cultural Studies). It provides students with the theoretical and analytical tools to make sense of people’s interaction with “new” communication objects, to identify the continuities and discontinuities between pre- and post-media convergence and to discuss key societal questions raised by ICTs, through argumentation and counter-argumentation.


IT and literature: new practices of digital writing

At the intersection between IT and Literature, this course seeks to acquaint students with the available Computer-Assisted Methods and Tools to analyze and interpret literary texts, to raise their awareness of the epistemological frictions and encounters between IT and literature and to develop their scholarly interest in contemporary writing practices in the digital world.


Communication Strategies and Organizations Development: building a project culture around ICTs uses

Building on interdisciplinary insights from Sciences and Technologies Studies (STS), Sociology of uses (Sociologie des usages) and Information and Communication Sciences, this course prepares students to undertake an ICT innovation project in a (real or simulated) organizational context and build an awareness of the dynamics of convergence and divergence of cultural appropriations of innovation.


Cultural Event Organization and Mediation in English

This course covers the traditional and contemporary approaches to Cultural Mediation in order to equip students with the necessary theoretical knowledge which will allow them to successfully involve English-speaking publics into the “March In Museums”, a cultural festival  taking place in the French Riviera and a long-term partner of the Master program. 


Oral Expression Skills

Consecutive Interpreting

This course revolves around the technique and the art of interpreting in consecutive mode. Students learn to analyze, process and take note of a speech delivered in French and to render it in Spanish and/or Catalan by relying on their notes. They develop an awareness of quality expectations in the communication context.


Simultaneous Interpreting

BA in Translation and Interpreting (Interpreting Track), UPF, Barcelona, Spain, 2010-2014
This course revolves around the technique and the art of interpreting in simultaneous mode. Students learn to split their attention, manage their working memory load in order to simultaneously process a speech (delivered in French and/or English) and deliver it in their native language (in Spanish and/or Catalan). They develop an awareness of quality expectations in the communication context.
